Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery at a jewellery shop in Footscray on Tuesday.

Police said three men used hammers to force their way into the Paisley Street store about 10.30am.

The men were dressed in dark clothing and wearing masks, and smashed cabinets inside the store, police said.

No staff members were hurt during the incident, and at this stage it is unknown what was taken.

Police believe the men left the scene in a black BMW SUV with stolen plates, which was being driven by a fourth man.

The vehicle travelled west on Paisley Street, before turning south on Albert Street, police said.

Anyone with information or with dashcam footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
