Police ask Pokemon GO players for assistance in Altona

The end of Altona pier is a known spot for anglers to cast their fishing bait, but a different kind of lure had hundreds of Pokemon GO players lining up on Sunday.

Players are swarming into Altona, a hotspot for catching the small virtual creatures that can be seen in real-life settings through a phone or tablet.

Virtual “lures” are used to bring Pokemon to the players’ location, where they can be snagged.

Players have taken to online forums asking if it’s worth hiking three hours to Altona and the resounding response has been, “Yes”.

A Facebook group, Altona on the go, is one of several created for players to share information.

Players converging after dark could also be helping fight crime by providing a passive form of surveillance.

Inspector Michelle Young urged Pokemon-crazed players to help catch crooks as well.

“If you see someone or something that looks suspicious whilst out chasing your Pokemons throughout Hobsons Bay or other areas, please consider reporting it through to 000 or Crime Stoppers.”
