A boy who was found unresponsive in a car in Newport on Monday had been hiding in the rear, police have revealed.
The eight-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in hospital after he was discovered by one of his parents inside a black Kia Carnival minivan on Maddox Road about 2.45pm, as the temperature hovered around 32 degrees.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said the boy had been in the car since his mother dropped her children at St Margaret Mary’s Primary School in Spotswood in the morning.
“The boy’s mother dropped her children at primary school in the morning, however didn’t realise one of the kids had climbed into the rear of the car and hid himself,” she said.
“She has driven to work and parked her car without knowing he was in there.
“The boy’s mother located him in the vehicle and he was conveyed to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. Police are treating the incident as an accident.”
In a message to families on Monday, Newport Gardens Primary School principal Simon McGlade confirmed the child was the son of a staff member, but would not confirm if the parent was a teacher.
“As you may be aware, an incident occurred today at school involving a staff member and a member of their family,” he wrote.
“The incident didn’t involve any students from our school.
“Support will be made available for any staff, students and families that need it,” Mr McGlade said, asking for privacy for those involved.”
