A man has been arrested after ramming a police vehicle in a stolen utility in Footscray on Thursday morning.

Police patrolling Leander Street came across the stolen Nissan Navara parked outside a house just after 10am on September 5.

While officers were making inquiries, a man drove-off in the Nissan with police swiftly giving chase.

The driver and sole occupant rammed into the police sedan before slamming into a power pole.

He then reversed into a parked civilian vehicle before crashing into another power pole.

The driver then attempted to run away from the vehicle but was chased down by police who used capsicum spray to arrest him on Eleanor Street.

The 36-year-old Footscray man was transported to hospital with minor injuries where he remains under police guard.

No one was injured as a result of the ramming.

Police believe that the Nissan was stolen from an address in Kalkallo sometime between September 4 and the early hours of September 5.
