Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit [CIU] detectives have called for public assistance following a firearms incident in West Footscray in May.

Maribyrnong CIU First Constable Hayden Bennett said the incident took place at about Monday, May 16 about 8.50 pm at an apartment complex on Roberts Road.

“Two victims, a male and a female, drove into a secure carpark of an apartment complex in Footscray West and they were followed in on foot by a male offender,” he said.

“That offender has run in after them and produced what appears to be a small black handgun.

“He has racked the handgun and pointed it at the victims.”

The victims, a 27-year-old man from West Footscray and a 24-year-old woman from West Footscray, were not injured during the incident.

First Constable Bennett said the male driver broke through the carpark’s gate to flee from the offender but no shots were fired during the incident.

“The victim in the vehicle who was driving managed to turn around the vehicle,” he said.

“The offender has tried to run after the vehicle but was unable to catch up.”

First Constable Bennett said the offender viewed in CCTV footage obtained by police appears to be a Caucasian man in his late 40s to 50s and was wearing a red hoodie, blue jeans and blue Adidas runners.

“The victims have told us they don’t know who this person is,” he said.

“They are obviously very shaken up by the incident.

“They’re lucky they weren’t caught in a position where they couldn’t escape.”
