Police investigate suspicious West Footscray fire

Police are investigating a suspicious house fire which broke out in West Footscray early Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to an Essex Street property shortly after 1.30om following multiple reports of a blaze.

More than 25 firefighters arrived to the property to find the fire had engulfed the rear of the house.

A number of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered through the front of the property to contain the fire and stop the blaze spreading to surrounding homes.

 

MFB firefighters took less than 15 minutes to bring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported.

Victoria Police senior constable Adam West said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but the incident is being treated as suspicious.

A crime scene has been established and an arson chemist is examining the site.
