The Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating a two-car collision in Maribyrnong.
Emergency services were called after a white Toyota sedan collided with a BMW sedan on Birdwood Street near the intersection of Merlyn Street, about 6.05pm on Tuesday.
Shortly before the incident, a police car saw the oncoming Toyota overtaking a tram on the wrong side of Gordon Street.
The police were unable to stop the Toyota before the collision occurred.
The driver of the BMW was a 34-year-old Sunshine North woman who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A five-year-old girl was also in the same vehicle, and was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
A 26-year-old Flemington man was behind the wheel of the Toyota and was taken to hospital under police guard with serious injuries.
A third man from the Toyota fled the scene on foot and was believed to be carrying a knife.
The man was last seen on Mitchell Street and is described as African in appearance.
He was wearing a red baseball cap and dark-coloured clothing.
