Police officer hit during Newport arrest

A police officer was taken to hospital after being hit in the face in Newport on Friday.

Victoria Police spokesman Paul Turner said the officer was responding to a report of a woman being robbed and assaulted on a bus on Douglas Parade about 8pm.

Police located the accused assailant, a 20-year-old Altona North man, in North Road. Leading Senior Constable Turner said police used capsicum spray to subdue the man when he became aggressive.

“A short altercation took place and a male senior constable was struck to the face,” he said.

“The man was arrested a short time later and has been charged with a number of robbery and assault offences.”
