Police officers punched, kicked at Newport

Two police officers were taken to hospital after being assaulted at Newport early Wednesday morning.

Sergeant Cameron Scott said the night-shift van was called to do a welfare check at a Collingwood Road address about 12.30am.

It is understood the officers were checking on a pregnant woman.

“A man came out of the premises and allegedly starting throwing punches and kicking the officers,” Sergeant Scott said.

“A female then appeared from the house and hindered police.”

He said capsicum spray was used and multiple police units arrived.

The female leading senior constable and male senior constable suffered facial injuries requiring hospital treatment.

They have since been discharged.

A 40-year-old Newport man who was arrested at the scene remains under police guard in hospital.

The woman involved is expected to be interviewed at a later time.
