Victoria Police are calling for community involvement in a pair of new road safety initiatives.

The Green Light Initiative – for Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Communities (GLI – CALD) is a community-based program which aims to strengthen partnerships between learner drivers and their supervising as well as promoting safe driving in Australia.

Police are looking for supervising or learner drivers who want to improve their skills on the road, to get involved.

Participants in the Green Light Initiative will learn key road rules and safety tips, explore safer travel options and have the opportunity to discuss driving and road safety with police officers.

Along with teaching members of the community how to drive more safely, police want them to keep an eye out for those who are driving recklessly too.

The ‘See it. Share it!’ campaign allows for motorists to anonymously report hoons and dangerous drivers they see while out on the road.

Dashcam footage of drivers putting other road users at risk can be uploaded anonymously to the campaign website where it will be shared with Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers Victoria.

Speeding, running red lights, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic and driving while using phones are among the behaviours police want footage of.

In the past five years, 1,200 lives have been lost on Victorian roads including 295 in 2023, the highest road toll in 15 years.
