Pop-up park proposal for West Footscray

The pop-up park would block Blandford Street

Cr Catherine Cumming floated the idea for a Blandford Street pop-up park at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Her notice of motion in support of the plan argued the location would provide a green space linking Martin and Shorten Reserves and the RecWest facility on Essex Street, calm traffic near Footscray West Primary School and prevent rat-running and speeding traffic problems.

The motion suggested the park would be a place to meet or sit adjacent to the dogs off lead park and creates a more safe and pleasant environment for local pedestrian and cycling activity.

“It is possible that the temporary pop up park could be implemented for the first school term in 2016 and funding sourced from savings in the 2015/16 budget.”

A report will be prepared for consideration at the December Council meeting that provides a concept plan for the park, a plan for community consultation and details ondesign, costs and a possible timeline.

The idea follows the establishment of a permanent park in Ballarat Streeet, Yarravile, the site of an earlier pop-up park trial, as well as West Footscray pop-up “parklets” trialled in Barkly Street parking bays last year.
