Preserving Hobsons Bay’s natural environment

The Emu-foot Grassland on the banks of the Skeleton Creek is one of my favourite spots in the municipality and I have been proud to be involved in efforts to conserve this special place for many years as a passionate member of the Friends of Skeleton Creek.

The Grassland is home to several species of rare or endangered plant life which have been coaxed back to life through the hard work of Friends of Skeleton Creek volunteers.

I want to give special thanks to the group’s service and their dedication to caring for the area. If you would like to roll up your sleeves and get involved, please join their next maintenance day on 24 April from 1pm to 3pm.

Speaking of conservation areas, Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre Inc. is hosting a public open day on Saturday 7 May to showcase plans for a regional wellbeing and environmental centre at HD Graham Reserve near the RAMSAR listed Cheetham Wetlands.

The centre would provide a place for locals and visitors to connect with nature, improve health and wellbeing and be inspired to care for our precious natural environment.

Council is working with Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre Inc. to seek state and federal government investment in this important project which could unlock the eco-tourism potential of the region. Visit hobsonsbaywetlandscentre.org.au for more info.

One of my favourite parts about being a councillor is having the opportunity to meet so many of the residents who form the fabric of our wonderful community.

I really enjoyed my time at the Altona Green Fete earlier this month and would like to give a special shout out to the staff and families of Altona Green Primary school for putting on such a fabulous celebration.

Our newly launched Coffee with a Councillor program is all about providing an opportunity for residents to connect with councillors to ask questions about key projects and areas of concern.

My fellow Wetlands Ward Councillor Matt Tyler will be hosting coffee on Saturday 7 May at Homestead Run in Seabrook and I am very much looking forward to my turn later in the year.
