Projecting an old experience

The cinematic grandeur of the 1940s and ’50s returns to The Sun Theatre this week with the screening of Quentin Tarantino’s new bloody western, The Hateful Eight. The Yarraville cinema is one of only a handful around the world able to show the film in the way Tarantino wants cinema-goers to experience it – in 70-millimetre ultra Panavision. The screening – featuring extra footage and an intermission – will take place with a restored projector found in the garage of former Sun projectionist Brian Davis (pictured), the one-time manager of the Grand Theatre in Footscray. Screenings will be held four times daily from Thursday ahead of the digital release the following Thursday. Details: www.suntheatre.com.au
