A Newport resident has placed a mannequin on his roof in protest at “greedy” developers.
Vincent Cocca and numerous others are objecting to plans to demolish a single storey house for a three-storey, 11-dwelling apartment block at 96 Wilkins Street.
Glossop Town Planning, which lodged the plans with Hobsons Bay council, also applied to provide less parking than required under the planning scheme.
Mr Cocca said the mannequin was intended to represent people “living on top of” him.
“I’m just going to show what it’s like to have another person living on your roof,” he said.
“It’s about saving Newport, this is ridiculous.
“I’m going to lose all my sunshine.
“I don’t mind somebody developing, I don’t mind the area moving forward, but this is a multiplex.”
Mr Cocca said the street was already congested with parked cars.
“They’ve got 11 dwellings and they are basically saying that they want parking for only 10, which is crap,” he said.
“In the plans, they’re saying that they are hoping they’re going to rely on street parking, which is ridiculous.
“All the parking’s taken.”
Glossop’s planning documentation stated: “It is often the case that on-street carparking is more convenient and accessible for visitors rather than having to navigate into a basement carpark.
It stated: “The existing dwelling does not contribute to the significance of the heritage precinct and its demolition is appropriate.
“Its replacement with a high quality built form makes efficient use of the land whilst carefully responding to its sensitive interfaces.”
