Hobsons Bay council is running a coffee cup campaign, collecting disposable nappies and hosting a discussion session as part of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign to raise awareness of violence against women.

Anti-violence messages will be stamped on takeaway coffee cups at five Altona cafes: Salt n Pepa, Hangar 1one2, Pier 71, Melissa Cakes and Ready Bean Go.

The campaign, from November 25 to December 10, is being promoted with hashtags of #16Days or #HobsonsBay.

Mayor Peter Hemphill said that with almost two women a week being killed in Australia by their partner or ex-partner already in 2015, the council wanted to actively make a difference.

The council is also calling for donations of unused disposable nappies.

Deputy mayor Sandra Wilson said donated nappies would be given to The Nappy Collective for distribution to organisations supporting families in need.

“Let’s not forget that of women who have experienced domestic violence, 61 per cent had children in their care when the violence occurred,” she said.

“Council will happily accept even just a handful of unused nappies as long as they are clean and preferably labelled with the size.”

Collection boxes are at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre and Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre in Altona, and all local libraries and maternal and child health centres.

A discussion session titled, ‘Crafternoon for a Cause’, will also be held on November 28 at 2.30pm at the Louis Joel centre.

Guest speakers will talk about preventing men’s violence against women in Hobsons Bay.

Free childcare can be arranged by calling 9932 1284.
