A number of Footscray and Maribyrnong community members will be uniting with a number of Tomorrow Movement members to protest against the Flemington Racecourse flood wall on Saturday, November 5.

Protestors from the Tomorrow Movement group will be meeting from 11am to 2pm at the Footscray Park barbecue area to advocate to the government to prioritise the protection of people’s homes during the climate crisis, following the October 14 Maribyrnong River flooding event.

Key speakers will include Greens candidate for Western Metro Bernadette Thomas and Save Footscray Park co-chair Gemma Cafarella.

Rally co-organiser and Footscray resident Luca Cernaz said the Flemington Racecourse flood wall’s protection of the racecourse highlighted the government’s prioritisation of the interests of big business over the interests of local communities.

“The community is coming together to demand better protections from future flooding and calling for immediate flood relief and prevention,” he said.

“We deserve a long-term climate plan to protect our communities in times of crisis.

“That’s why we’re also campaigning for a climate jobs guarantee, which would create thousands of good jobs in disaster management, providing secure housing and mitigating the worst impacts of the climate crisis.”
