Bayside P-12 College teacher Ross Schubach will be donning a helmet and pedalling his way along a number of Victoria’s most iconic roads for the 30th time as part of this year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride event.
Starting in Koroit on November 26, Mr Schubach and the team of 12 students from Year 7 to Year 12 will be travelling through the state’s south west before finishing in Buninyong on Sunday, December 4.
The ride will also mark the 34th time the school has entered a team in the ride, which is more times than any other school participating in this year’s ride.
Mr Schubach said the ride provides an opportunity for the students to set achievable goals during the challenging 522-kilometre route.
“The students work as a team while on the ride and this gives them skills and experiences that they can apply to their lives,” he said.
“This can have significant benefits to a student’s self-esteem.
“With the amount of riding students will do in preparation for the ride, they will become safe and proficient road users with an understanding and perspective of a cyclist.”
Mr Schubach said the challenge also encourages a broader world view and a deeper understanding of the values of teamwork.
“The opportunity for students to see and experience different parts of Victoria that they may not have the chance to is also an attraction and benefit of taking part.
“They work as a team together, but they also gain a sense of community with the other riders.”
“I encourage and have witnessed many times our students help other riders on the road and at the campsites.”
