The Truganina Explosives Reserve will be alive with birdlife and community activity on Saturday, October 8, as part of the Wings to Wellness Open Day event at Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre [HBWC]
Coinciding with World Migratory Bird Day and World Mental Health Day, the event will welcome people of all ages from 11am to 3pm across a range of activities, including a wellness and nature speakers’ panel, a performance from the Newport Community Choir and guided wetland walks.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunch on the lawn from noon to 2pm or grab a snag at the event’s sausage sizzle.
The more creative attendees will be able to take part in the Paint the Flock art activity throughout the day, while visitors can also look at the plans for a new $16 million state-of-the-art Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre building.
The event would also celebrate migratory birds who call the Altona Meadows’ wetlands home, including the bar-tailed Godwit, who has the distinction of recording the longest single non-stop flight of any bird – just under 13,000 kilometres across nine days.
The HBWC committee have been advocating for funding for the construction of a new centre for a number of years, with the $16 million project recently receiving a $5.5 million commitment from the Liberals and Nationals coalition.
