Remembering the service of Australia’s veterans

The Newport Returned and Services League [RSL] sub-branch is encouraging Newport residents to support this year’s Poppy Appeal to mark Remembrance Day on Friday, November 11.

Sub-branch president Ernie Poole said the funds raised through the Poppy Appeal allowed the sub-branch to deliver assistance to men and women who have served for Australia and now require support.

“I encourage members of the community to engage with their local RSL and to not only show that they care by buying and wearing a poppy this November 11, but to help us in this massive effort by volunteering some of their time,” he said.

“Every volunteer is valued, and their actions help us ensure our veterans remain supported in all aspects of their lives after service.

“We literally can not do all this without their help.”

Mr Poole said the work of each RSL sub-branch across the country was “vital” across the community and for a number of veterans.

For more than 100 years, the annual Poppy Appeal has supported Australian veterans and their families and has become an annual November tradition across the state.

Poppies, badges and other Remembrance Day memorabilia is available at the Newport RSL and local Woolworths and Officeworks stores.
