Restaurant fire in Footscray Market

A restaurant in Footscray Market caught fire on Friday, May 5, no injuries were reported.

On Friday, May 5, Golden Horse Seafood & BBQ Chinese Restaurant inside of Footscray Market caught fire.

Shortly after 5pm, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a fire in the kitchen following multiple calls to triple-0 reporting smoke and flames.

A trader in the Footscray Market, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that most of the shops were still open when the fire started.

“Most of the shops were still open and trading when security came around and asked us to evacuate the market due to the fire,” they said.

An automatic sprinkler system alarm activated simultaneously to the 13 total FRV units who attended the scene to extinguish the fire.

The fire was contained to the kitchen area and was caused by the ignition of cooking oil on a gas cooker, no injuries were reported to first responders.

The restaurant is located on the outer edge of the market on Hopkins St, Footscray.

The market trader said that Golden Horse Restaurant is now closed, the timeframe of the closure and the future of the restaurant is unknown.

Golden Horse Restaurant was contacted but was unable to get through, the manager of the Footscray Market was contacted and refused to comment.
