Restaurant to reopen after latest fire

The Yarraville restaurant attacked by arsonists for the second time in 12 months on Easter Monday, will reopen tomorrow.

The co-owners of Eleni’s Kitchen and Bar, Eleftheria and Natalie Amanatidis, have confirmed the Greek restaurant will reopen on Wednesday, April 23, two days after arsonists attacked the rear entrance on Canterbury Street, damaging the outdoor dining area.

Firefighters were called to the scene at about 4.30am on April 21 to find a white SUV rammed into the rear of the restaurant and set alight.

Fire crews required breathing apparatus to enter the building and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring businesses.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire which is being treated as suspicious.

In June last year, the restaurant was gutted when arsonists launched a similar attack on the front of the property facing Anderson Street.

After almost five months of repairs, the restaurant reopened in November.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from our customers, neighbours, suppliers and friends,” said the Amanatidis sisters in a joint statement.

“Your kind words and encouragement have been a source of strength for us during this difficult time.”

The Easter Monday fire came just four days after a book launch was held at the restaurant for the memoir and cookbook Eleftheria Amanatidis wrote while the business was closed following last year’s fire.

A police investigation is underway.
