Legendary race caller Greg Miles is selling his Williamstown home of 20 years.
Miles retired from calling after his 36th Melbourne Cup last year. He’s hoping it will be a race to the finish when 51 Cole Street goes under the hammer on December 1.
The Edwardian family home, circa 1890s, was renovated in 1999, with a second storey and separate home office/studio added.
Miles and his wife, Alison, raised their three children in the house, but are downsizing.
“It’s been a beautiful home – we’re really sad to be leaving it,” Miles said. “But the opportunity to move to something smaller came up, so we’ve gone a bit earlier than we wanted to.
“We’ve been able to bring up our kids here. We’ve got a park right opposite, it’s in a beautiful part of Williamstown. A close walk to the shops and the beach and the railway station – it’s just been a superb family home.”
Miles said an in-ground pool was installed in 2006 for the children.
“Now our kids have largely moved out,” he said. “It’s a five-bedroom home – it’s too big for just the two of us now.
“I’m sad to be leaving. Whoever buys it is going to be a very happy person because there’s absolutely nothing to do but come in and enjoy.”
Miles is moving to an apartment, still in his beloved Williamstown.
“I’d never leave Williamstown, absolutely never,” he said.
Selling agent Sweeney Estate Agents director Wayne Sweeney said the house, on the corner of Hanmer Street, was a landmark property.
“It’s 30.3 squares of internal living on 552 square metres of land,” he said.
“Great home, great opportunity – hasn’t come up for 20 years but now the time has arrived.”
