Laverton P-12 College recently hosted a cooking session with Hobsons Bay mayor Tony Briffa, for their Year 12 VET Hospitality students.
The idea came from one of the 2023 college captains Sienna Bell, who introduced herself to the mayor at a previous school event.
Principal Lisa Robinson said Ms Bell began talking with Cr Briffa about their shared passion for cooking desserts, it was then proposed the mayor visit the college and host a cooking session.
“A total of seven students were involved in the cooking session which was attended by the mayor and the deputy mayor Diana Grima,” she said.
Ms Robinson said the students learnt how to make Maltese Almond Biscuits, among other learning focused around the origins of the biscuit and how the country’s cuisine has been influenced by historical invasions over the centuries.
“The students were honoured to have the mayor make the time to come down and share their passion for cooking,” she said.
“Along with the students preparing the biscuits, they also prepared antipasto platters, club sandwiches, and hot food.
“With all the food they hosted a morning tea in the college café where staff could enjoy nibbles and barista-made coffee from the students.”
Ms Robinson said this was a great opportunity for prospective families who were visiting the college on a school tour to join in on the morning tea.
“The morning tea allowed the councillors to mingle with staff, as well as the chance to introduce myself to prospective families.”
Ms Bell spoke on behalf of her fellow students and said the visit was “pretty cool”.
“It was nice to get to meet and get to know the mayor, we thank the mayor for putting the input in and taking the time out of her day.”
