Fifty years after the first lunar landing, people are being invited to explore frontiers at Scienceworks in Spotswood.

NASA exobiologist Darlene Lim will speak at Scienceworks during National Science Week, which will run from August 10 to 18.

She will talk about how exploring extreme environments on Earth provides insight into conditions on Mars and other planets. The event will include a planetarium screening and telescope viewing.

Other Science Week highlights include a free theatre performance in the Scienceworks amphitheatre.

Launch to the Future will focus on how space programs and lunar science propel humans into the future using STEM.

Apollo 11, a cinematic event 50 years in the making, will be shown on the world’s largest IMAX screen at Carlton.

Scienceworks general manager Jonathan Shearer said children would be excited by workshops on robotics and coding, but there was something for all ages.

“National Science Week celebrates scientific innovation, attracts young people into the field, and emphasises that science is never ‘finished’,” he said. “Scienceworks proudly welcomes audiences of all ages through our doors to continue talking, learning and sharing about the wonders of the universe.

“Our trusted experts are always so excited to share their knowledge with the public in engaging, fun and compelling ways.

“We do this every day at Scienceworks, and National Science Week is an annual highlight.”
