The Williamstown Seagulls have received a boost as they begin the second half of the VFLW and VFL seasons, with facility upgrades at their home ground now complete.
Williamstown FC president Meryl Dooley, vice president Michael Howlett, and chief executive Ash Baker were present for the opening of the upgraded facilities at DSV Stadium on June 11 , as were federal member for Gellibrand,Tim Watts, and state member for Williamstown, Melissa Horne, whose governments both helped fund the project.
The state government provided $1 million towards the $2.2 million project, with the federal government adding a further $500,000 and the rest provided by the AFL.
The upgrades include dedicated female changing rooms, gender-neutral bathrooms, office space, kitchen space, medical rooms, coaches rooms and a player review area.
There is also now a dedicated medical room for away teams.
Ms Horne said with the upgrades now complete, Williamstown’s VFLW team, which is currently equal top of the table, could rise to even greater heights.
“The upgrade is a game changer for our female Seagulls, who have clearly embraced the new facilities with an amazing season, currently tying at first,” Ms Horne said.
Mr Watts said the upgraded facilities would benefit more than just the Seagulls VFLW team.
“I’m proud to be a part of a federal Labor government that has delivered support, alongside the state government and the AFL, for women’s and girls’ sports participation and stronger opportunities for social connection and capacity in our community,” Mr Watts said.
