Seaholme couple to travel 3500km in ‘shitbox’

It seems crazy to drive from Queensland to Tasmania in a “shitbox” worth $1000, but a Seaholme couple will try to do exactly that.

Lee McClenaghan and fiance Ryan Buckle will drive one of the more than 200 cars booked in for next month’s Shitbox Rally to raise funds for the Cancer Council.

Fundraising as the Swashbucklers, the couple will attempt to drive more than 3500 kilometres from Mackay to Hobart in their 1993 Holden Commodore station wagon.

It’s not a race but a challenge to drive cars worth $1000 or less across some of Australia’s most difficult roads.

“We’ve been on the waiting list for five years to do this and because of a team’s late withdrawal we got a spot,” Ms McClenaghan said.

“We found a car and raised the minimum $4000 through family and friends pretty fast. You can have a maximum of two people in each car because, obviously, they break down left, right and centre, so you’ve got to be able to carry another team in your car.

“If the cars do break down they get towed to the next spot for the evening and, hopefully, bandaged up to go again.”

Mr Buckle said the two didn’t have a mechanical bone in their bodies but were looking forward to the challenge.

“You have to do your part and give a bit back and what better charity than the Cancer Council?” he said.
