Search for dog beater caught on video

Investigations are underway into the alleged striking of a dog with a chain at a park in Yarraville.

RSPCA Victoria is appealing for information about the incident which occurred in Bellairs Park between 11am and 12.30pm on Thursday, September 28.

Video footage provided to RSPCA Victoria shows what appears to be a person striking a dog with a chain leash, following repeated attempts to hit the dog while chasing it in the park.

The person then left with the cream-coloured Staffordshire bull terrier on the lead.

RSPCA Victoria inspectorate team leader Sharna Fitt said the dog is reported to have suffered significant stress and possible trauma.

“We are pleading for the public’s help to identify the person seen in the footage,” she said.

“It is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (POCTAA) to beat, wound, torment or terrify an animal, and anyone who is found guilty of such an act can face fines up to $39,642 or 12 months imprisonment.”

The person is described as being of medium height with grey hair, wearing a blue windcheater with a red hood and carrying a large navy-coloured backpack.

It is unclear in the video footage whether they are male or female.

RSPCA says it’s unable to release the video footage or still images from the footage as this could potentially be used in court.
