SES flat out as storms strike

Flash flooding took Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong residents by surprise late Saturday night, leaving some with leaking roofs caused by storm damage.

Weather Bureau duty forecaster Richard Russell said most of the rain – with frequent lightning – fell during the last hour of Saturday.

Hobsons Bay recorded about 30 millimetres of rain and Maribrynong slightly less.

Footscray SES responded to 15 calls for building damage and flooding.

And Footscray police were left searching for the owner of a puppy (below) who walked up to officers in the wake of the storms.

After a call-out via Facebook failed to identify the owner, there were “a few broken hearts at Footscray police station” when the Lost Dogs’ Home collected him on Sunday.

Hobsons Bay SES deputy controller Peter Tester urged people to ensure their roofs were in good condition.

“All requests for assistance have been related to the storms, with water leaking through roof tiles and tin sheets,” he said.

A number of these homes had water running through light fittings.

“When water has run through light fittings or other electrical points, our advice is not to use those lights until they have been checked by a qualified electrician,” Mr Tester said.

“We also recommend that residents check gutters and clear any debris that may stop water draining away.”

Mr Tester said recent rain had also caused lots of flash flooding across roads.

“People are reminded not to walk or drive through flooded roads,” he said.
