An Altona based quilting group has been recognised at the 2021 Volunteering Awards, receiving runner up for their outstanding community work during the pandemic.
The Seabreeze Quilters took home second place under the COVID-19 Support and Connection Category at the awards ceremony on March 24.
The group, comprised of 75 dedicated quilters, have been engaged with the Hobsons Bay community for years since first forming in 2006.
It was their work in 2021 with the Meals on Wheels service and their commitment to stay connected during the pandemic that saw them finally recognised for the amazing community work they do on a daily basis.
Last year in the lead up to Christmas, the group made 450 gift bags to give to those who receive the service in Hobsons Bay, almost double what the group were able to deliver the previous year.
Kim Reilly, President of the Seabreeze Quilters said throughout the pandemic, the group held virtual meetings, and even held a virtual retreat, which kept members connected through such a troubling time.
“You’ll get comments from members saying you know, if it hadn’t been for the virtual retreats that we ran, you know, [they] didn’t know how [they] would have survived COVID, because we gave [them] a reason for living, we gave [them] purpose and those sorts of things.”
“As COVID hit we realised that there was a service we could provide to our members by staying connected.”
“What we did in a small way, is worth celebrating and talking about because we’re hoping that other people will do this, if ever the need arises.”
Ms Reilly said the act of giving someone in need a homemade quilt is so much more powerful than most people would think.
“To have something handmade that is made for you is something that’s also very special.”
“What we do is a lot of work for others, but we know what the benefit is for ourselves in doing that.”
The Seabreeze Quilters have finally secured a new space for their growing member base, and are more than happy to welcome anyone of any age and gender to join them.
“We are open to anyone wanting to join at any skill level as well.”
