Shaping the future

As we continue to work together to overcome significant challenges in recent times, council remains committed to a bigger and brighter future for our community.

The Proposed Budget 2023/24, endorsed for community comment this month, supports this by considering the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, last October’s major flood event, and the increasing cost of living.

It is premised on 2.98 per cent increase in total rates revenue, less than the 3.5% provided for by state government, and aims to deliver essential services, enhance infrastructure, and maintain our city’s liveability.

With a planned expenditure of $208 million, we intend to continue to invest in areas like roads, laneways, footpaths, public realm upgrades, parks, open spaces, recreation facilities, early years and community centres, and waste management.

Just under a third of the proposed budget would be channelled into capital works.

Beyond the proposed budget, we are also now seeking feedback on the Draft Library Plan 2023-2025.

Cherished by our community as places that provide safe spaces to learn, connect, and support vulnerable members, our aim is to ensure Maribyrnong Libraries remain vibrant, accessible, and responsive to residents’ expectations.

Developed with community and staff input, the draft plan focuses on staff development and engagement with the community to provide necessary programs, collections, and services.

It also paves the way for longer-term thinking about library infrastructure and services, with every dollar invested generating $4.30 of local community benefits.

Additionally, we are progressing with the McIvor Reserve Master Plan, including an indoor sports facility after an extended period of community engagement which has involved a lot of listening by and discussion amongst councillors, and two votes before a resolution.

While this has not been a process that has come about quickly, we will now see a legacy project delivered that represents a significant investment in our community’s health, well-being, and sporting life, providing modern, accessible, high-quality sports facilities.

It will also be a project that, despite divergent views now, we will all be incredibly proud of in the years

to come.

Please share their thoughts on the Draft Library Plan 2023-2025 and the Proposed Budget 2023/2024 at yourcityyourvoice.com.au.

There will also be a live-streamed budget Q&A session on Thursday, April 27 from 7pm to 8pm.

With your feedback, we can continue invest in our community’s future, ensuring a safe, healthy, and vibrant Maribyrnong.

Join us on this important journey.
