Two young Maribyrnong designers have scooped inaugural awards for creating art that can be used for bicycle parking.

Claudia, 16, from Yarraville won the Creative Kids Bike Parking Design award in the secondary school category for creating a crocodile that has been fabricated and installed at McNish Reserve in Yarraville.

The other award went to Milli, 11, of Seddon who scooped the primary school prize for designing “the dragon of Maribyrnong” at Jensen Reserve in Footscray.

Claudia said she was overjoyed and proud her design had been brought to life for public benefit.

“It was so surreal seeing my design in the flesh,” Claudia said. “It looks even better than I could have imagined. I feel very happy about the fact that my design will be a part of the City of Maribyrnong for many years to come.

“I hope one day I can even show it to my grand-children. I didn’t expect to win this competition and I didn’t expect to get this opportunity so early in my life.”

The top 10 entries in each category of the competition, run by Maribyrnong council, were put to a judging panel that included a member of Victoria University art-science collective Skunk Control, Joyce Watts from CycleStyle.com.au, a representative from Ted’s Cycles Footscray and a member of the council’s city design team.
