Maribyrnong council is hosting a range of events and initiatives as part of this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence Campaign, including a movie screening and special story time events.

Running from Friday, November 25 to Saturday, December 10, the annual global initiative aims to bring together communities to address gender inequalities and eliminate violence against women.

Maribyrnong launched the campaign with a special conversation between Melbourne-based feminist writer and activist and family violence survivor and advocate Nicole Lee.

Maribyrnong mayor and council gender equity ambassador Sarah Carter said changes to how people talk about violence against women should extend beyond the 16-day campaign.

“Violence against women continues to be a serious and prevalent problem with devastating and widespread impacts,” she said.

“In Australia, on average, one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner.

“Recognising this, it is my strong desire that we work in unison to make meaningful and lasting change in our municipality.”

Braybrook Community Hub is hosting a free screening of ‘Hidden Figures’, a film about a team of female mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the United States of America’s space program from 12.30pm to 2.30pm on Thursday, December 1.

Local libraries across Maribyrnong are hosting special story-time sessions from Monday, December 5 to Friday, December 9.

Drummond Street Services will also be hosting an online session from 7pm to 8pm on Monday, December 5 exploring the impact of gender equality can have on children.

Help is available for those experiencing family or intimate partner violence can call 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) or Victoria Police on Triple-0.
