Despite the Spotswood Festival not going ahead as originally planned, locals still came out to support local businesses and musical acts in what turned out to be a successful event.

The inaugural Spotswood Festival was set to take place on Saturday April 30, with Hudsons Road blocked off for the special event.

However, about 6:40pm the night prior, the festival’s Facebook account published a post announcing the festival would not go ahead as the appropriate permits were not granted.

“We are devastated since this was about covid recovery, bringing the community together and supporting businesses in the local and surrounding areas. After having to pivot throughout covid, this is the last thing businesses needed,” the statement said.

With many businesses already organised for the festival, locals showed their support by showing up and buying the excess food that had been cooked. All the music acts were relocated to the Spotswood Hotel, where plenty of people showed up for a dance.

Metro Trains deemed the festival unsafe due to its close proximity to Spotswood train station. The festival had not received the relevant permits in time to continue with the event.

More details to come.
