St Monica’s wins second straight science award

Footscray’s St Monica’s Primary School has gone back-to-back, being recognised as Victoria’s top independent primary school for science for the second year in a row.

At the 2025 Science Talent Search (STS) held recently, St Monica’s again won the prestigious Peter Craig Award, recognising the exceptional standard of scientific inquiry, creativity, and innovation demonstrated by its students.

St Monica’s students secured the award for the second straight year by receiving an impressive seven bursary awards at the STS, with more than half of their submitted projects receiving bursaries or distinctions.

Not bad for a school with less than 100 students.

St Monica’s principal Andrea Wilberger said the achievement of its year 3-4 class was particularly impressive, with the class receiving a major bursary for their investigation into erosion.

“This is a particularly remarkable achievement, as typically only one class in each age group receives this award each year,” Ms Wilberger said.

“Even more impressively, this is the second year in a row that our 3/4 students have earned this prestigious recognition!”

Ms Wilberger said everyone at the school was proud of the students involved in the STS and thanked their teachers and support staff for guiding them throughout their projects and inspiring their passion for science.

St Monica’s received a trophy and a $250 gift voucher for winning the Peter Craig Award, with both presented at a special school assembly on Friday 12 December.
