I am saddened to see our community suffer after the Maribyrnong River burst its banks early Friday morning causing a significant flood event.
At this stage, more than 200 homes are known to been impacted by water damage.
Hard waste collection is underway, but the clean-up will take time.
Given the volume of hard waste, we’ll be using larger trucks and equipment to effectively scoop up the discarded items, which will also need to be sorted off site to be disposed of appropriately.
I understand how much our community is relying on us, and we will continue to pour every available resource into getting this done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Residents can be assured, we will not stop until it is done.
It requires not just manpower but also machinery and equipment beyond our normal resourcing, and we are very grateful to our neighbouring councils who have so generously provided support with this.
Street cleaning continues and I urge you all to stay safe around flood waters and during the clean-up.
Always wash your hands after handling debris and be sure to wear sturdy boots and rubber or leather gloves.
Please find more information on our website and via the SES.
The relief centre at the Maribyrnong Community Centre remains open between 9am and 5pm to provide ongoing assistance to residents and provide information on supports available.
Flood impacted residents can also email floodrecovery@maribyrnong.vic.gov.au with specific requests or concerns.
This inbox is monitored weekdays 9am to 5pm.
We are also delivering a community newsletter with flood information to residents.
This has been a devastating event to occur, but to see the community come together to support each other proves the strength of our municipality.
I want to thank all the volunteers, residents and neighbouring councils for their ongoing support.
More rain is predicted later this week, so please stay vigilant and follow the SES advice.
