Hobsons Bay council is calling for expressions of interest from artists, collectives and creative practitioners to contribute to its street art program next year.
Artists who are able to submit examples of previous works that show innovation, artistic excellence, participatory and inclusive practices and reference local places and heritage, are invited to apply.
Interested artists must make a submission that includes a current CV (one page per artist), a PDF portfolio with images and examples of two to 10 public artworks created in the past five years.
An artist statement and skills statement of no more than 300 words each and links to a creative practice digital platform are also required.
The 2024 street art program featured six murals painted on sites across Hobsons Bay.
These include visual artist Sarah Allen’s Tandoori Flames on Vernon Street, South Kingsville, and Lynn Bremner and Jess Wilson’s work showcasing Hobsons Bay’s local flora and fauna at the South Kingsville Community Centre.
Angharad Neal-Williams’ mural design at Little Rosebury Cafe in Altona Meadows features endangered plants and wildflowers from within emu-foot grasslands, while Hayden Dewar’s mural on the wall of the Second Avenue Grocer in Altona North balances the natural and man-made worlds.
Tidal Shift by Stephanie Cartledge on Blyth Street, Altona pays homage to marine life and Damien Arena’s Our Lakes on the corner of Challis and Wood Street, Newport captures the essence of the suburb.
Submissions for the 2025 program close on Friday, December 1, and can be made via the Smarty Grants portal: hobsonsbay.smartygrants.com.au/SA25
