Strength in numbers for mental health walk

Williamstown residents are encouraged to get ready to lace up and get walking to raise awareness for mental health as part of the Walk a Mile in My Shoes annual event.

Starting and finishing at Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown, the event will run from 9am to noon on Sunday, October 23.

Participants will receive a showbag and take part in a brief yoga and warm-up session before taking a one-mile walk along The Strand and then returning to Commonwealth Reserve.

Participants are asked to wear something green in honour of those experience mental health related illnesses.

Former AFL champions Nathan Brown and Nick Maxwell will also be running a children’s football clinic with the Williamstown Junior Football Club from 9am to noon at Commonwealth Reserve.

Walkers of all ages are welcome to take part in the walk, enjoy entertainment and go into the draw to win a number of prizes, including vouchers for accommodation and wellbeing experiences.

There will also be mental health clinic information on offer at stalls from TreeHaus Williamstown, the Newport Counselling and Psychology Service and Aspire Health and Psychology.

The organisers of the event are aiming to raise $8000 for mental health hubs to be introduced to schools across Hobsons Bay, with their GoFundMe fundraising total at $1160 at the time of publication.
