String of grass fires pose no health risk

Maribyrnong council have responded to residents concerns over a string of fires at the former munitions factory this year.

The first incident occurred on New Year’s Day, after a large grass fire was reported near the fence line of the factory on Raleigh Road. Police and emergency services were called out to three subsequent fires over the following weeks.

During public question time at the February 15 council meeting, one resident asked what the council was doing to fire out what kind of health risks the smoke from the fires may be having on residents in the area.

Mayor Anthony Tran said while council has offered support, seeing as the former defence site is on commonwealth land the event was managed entirely by the defence force. However Councillor Tran said he does acknowledge concerns in regards to smoke from the fire.

“During a large grass or brush fire, just as this one, there is increased risk to those with asthma, lung, heart and cardiovascular conditions and to those that are pregnant,” he said.

“Thankfully enough, no hazardous materials were involved so the risk of any potential impact on air quality and health of residents was greatest during the event itself….. given only grass was burning, any risk diminished once the smoke dissipated after the blaze was distinguished.”
