The weekend of February 12, 29 Hobsons Bay lifesavers competed in the 2022 Victorian Masters Championships at Lorne Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

There were 20 Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club (S&LC) competitors and nine

competitors hailing from Altona Life Saving Club (LSC) ranging from 30 to 62 years of age who represented Hobsons Bay on the start line in the water.

Athletes from Hobsons Bay were very successful against their competitors, placing in a number of the events they competed in.

Sally Leung, Gillian Schalkwijk and Valerie Scholes from Williamstown S&LC took out first prize in the 170+ years female surf teams, with Leung and Scholes also nabbing second place in the 50-54 years female board rescue.

The Altona LSC “Postmasters” also managed to take out the 220+ years male surf boat race.

Life Saving Victoria general manager of education and sport and club development Kate Simpson said she was delighted to have had the Hobsons Bay athletes at the championships.

“Lifesaving is for everyone, of all ages and abilities and sport is a fantastic way for our patrolling

members to actively train so they are rescue ready when patrolling our beaches,” she said.

“We are very grateful to Lorne SLSC and the local community for hosting us in this great region and we can’t wait to return in two weeks’ time for the Victorian Junior Championships.”
