The first anniversary of the death of Williamstown lacrosse legend Sue ‘Melli’ Sofarnos has been marked with a memorial seat dedicated to her.

The Australian Women’s Team player and coach died unexpectedly on September 19 last year.

Sofarnos first picked up a lacrosse stick 49 years ago at age 10 and in January 2020 had been awarded an OAM for her service to the sport.

From Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club, Ms Sofarnos became one of the most decorated Australian lacrosse players and coaches in history and was general manager of the 2021 team set to compete in the World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship in the US.

Her family has started the Sue Sofarnos Foundation in support of the Australian Women’s Team.

The Foundation posted on Facebook:

“Thank you to the Hobsons Bay City Council who this week voted unanimously to dedicate the beach bench seat where Sue’s ashes are in honour of her significant contribution to the social, civic and sporting life of Hobsons Bay.

“A memorial plaque will soon be placed there and will forever be known as ‘Sue’s Seat’.”

The foundation invited people to “visit ‘Sue’s Seat’ at the Williamstown back beach or her favourite swimming spot at the Crystal to remember Sue”.

‘Sue’s Seat’ is in Battery Road, about 200 metres from the Williamstown Football Club towards the Timeball Tower.
