Sunrise ceremony

Rotary Club of Yarraville is hoping to continue the conversation around Australia Day, by hosting a day of acknowledgement for the community.

This will be the third consecutive year the club has held the event which president Jebadiah Annear said is to address generational trauma.

“We have created Acknowledgement Day which will begin at sunrise because that is where we all start everyday,” he said.

First Nations artist Paul Kelly will begin the ceremony at Greenwich Reserve, by playing the Yidaki.

“The public are invited to join the gathering at sunrise to reflect, symbolically moving towards the sun together,” he said.

“The morning will unfold with a shared breakfast, soul-stirring performances and a delightful morning tea.”

Jebadiah believes that Rotary is the right organisation for this kind of event.

“Rotary is a non-political, non denominational, international organisation that believes in service above self,” he said.

“This enables us to have a conversation with a large demographic who may agree or not agree, but nevertheless the conversation will go on.

“With this event we acknowledge where everyone comes from and the conversation surrounding where we want to go and what we want to do.”

More than 100 people from the community are expected to attend from 6am-11am on Friday, January 26.
