Supporting artistic recovery

Maribyrnong residents are encouraged to dig deep in their cupboards for art supplies to support an art therapy donation drive supporting women and children who have faced family violence or homelessness.

McAuley Community Services for Women is running an art therapy donation drive at Footscray Library until Sunday, October 2.

McAuley Community Services for Women fundraising and engagement officer Hayley Marriott said the drive would welcome donations of art supplies, such as coloured pens and pencils, sketchbooks, Play-Doh and paints, as well as gift cards for retail outlets or vouchers for family activities.

“We do need art therapy supplies,” she said.

Ms Marriott said the initiative was the brainchild of a Mornington student.

She said the donation drive would also support their client in their participation in the Skills 4 Life program, which provides personal training and social connection to women chasing their passions.

“It’s a way to give that agency back,” Ms Marriott said.

Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said he urges anyone with unused craft supplies sitting at home to donate them to the drive.

“We have a generous and welcoming community here in the inner-west,” he said.

“Your gift helps others to express their own creativity, while also supporting their health and wellbeing.”
