Supporting wellbeing and development

This week is Children’s Week – a great chance to get your kids involved in some fun and interesting activities, but also to appreciate where our children grow up.

There is a range of events across Hobsons Bay, they’re all free and are a great mix of fun and educational sessions for families with children aged 12 and under.

There’s everything from arts and crafts, sport, creative dance and yoga, storytelling and more.

There are also some great sessions for parents to help you discuss and learn about how to give your child the best start in life.

This year’s theme is the right of all children to a standard of living that supports their wellbeing and healthy development.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how lucky we are that our children can grow up in a safe community that does so much to nurture them through every part of their development.

So much of what we do as a council centres around children and families and as a mum with a three-year-old daughter, I know from personal experience what a difference these services can make.

It’s so valuable to have this incredible wealth of knowledge and services to be able to call on as a parent.

From maternal and child health services to immunisation, playgroups, day care, outside of school programs, kindergartens and youth services, there’s so much we’ve come to rely on our councils to provide in the first weeks, months and years of our children’s lives.

That’s before you consider everything our libraries, arts and culture, and community centres have to offer both to educate and entertain kids all year round.

We’re always looking to improve the services and facilities we offer in this space across Hobsons Bay, or be creative and innovative to make life a little easier and fun for families.

Whether that’s redeveloping our kindergartens to cater for the growing numbers coming through our three and four-year-old kinder services, or trialling new ideas such as the reusable nappy rebate program that was run earlier this year, working with the community to understand what our needs are is so important.

Children’s Week runs until this Sunday, October 30.

There’s plenty on so please check out the full program of events at hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/childrensweek.
