Altona community members are invited to help clean up Altona Beach next month to encourage action against pollution.

A group of Year 9 Westbourne Grammar School students are organising the event at Altona Beach between 9am and 11am on Sunday, October 9.

Two student groups – Operation Environmend and Save the Sea and Life – are teaming up to make a difference in their local area.

Developing from a school program, the groups are encouraging students to take action on issues they are passionate about in small groups.

Joanne Tangbe of Operation Environmend co-ordinator Joanne Tangbe said the focus of her group is to encourage reductions of food, water and plastic waste.

“We chose Altona Beach because we all live around that area,” she said.

“With summer coming up there’s going to be a lot of people there, and we want to make sure that it’s something that everyone can get involved in.”

“We hope that a lot of people come, especially from the general public and especially Altona citizens, because it won’t just benefit us, it will also benefit them, their home, their planet and everything like that.”

Ms Tangbe said she hopes the group can continue to host events in the future.

“We only have one Earth and it’s important for us to take care of it, and even small things can help like this,” she said.
