Marine expert gives talk on maritime pollution

RMIT University associate professor and Altona resident Mark Osborn will present a talk on maritime pollution at an event hosted by Friends of Greenwich Bay.

The grassroots group revegetates and helps care for coastal bushland near the boat ramp at the northern end of the Strand at Newport.

Group member Maria McGuane said Mr Osborn would speak about the environmental impacts of plastic pollution on rivers and seas and about his team’s research on the issue.

“Our local coastal marine habitats are precious,” she said.

“We look forward to learning about how Mark’s research on plastic pollution and microbes can inform our work.”

Over the past few months, local environment groups have been surveying litter, including plastics, in coastal areas of Williamstown and Newport.

The talk is at 7.30pm on October 7 at Village Real Estate, 20 Hall Street, Newport. To RSVP, email greenwichbayfriends@gmail.com
