Newport Lakes Primary School will be taking part in national Ride2School day, to help celebrate the benefits of active transport.

Over 350,000 students across Australia are set to ride, scoot, skate or walk to school on Friday, March 25 for Bicycle Network’s National Ride2School Day.

The program helps children get their 60 minutes of daily exercise and allows them to discover the joy of riding which will hopefully reinforce healthy habits in the future.

Newport Lakes Primary School teacher Mitchell Webster said there are multiple benefits of riding to school, including getting in your daily exercise, spending extra time with loved ones and getting familiar with the road rules.

“My advice to a parent thinking about their child riding to school for the first time is to take your child on a practice trip before school or on the weekend,” he said.

“Know how to correctly use the safety features of a bike such as the brakes and helmet.

“Being aware of traffic is important. Knowing to stop, look, listen and think before crossing the road.”
