A developer has lodged plans to transform an Altona street by replacing 10 single-storey villa units with 14 predominantly three-storey townhouses.

Bardin Planning Co-ordination has applied to redevelop 4-22 Fresno Street, which is opposite Altona Tennis Club and several sporting ovals.

Some members of the Altona Community Action Group have expressed concern about the proposal, labelling it a “gross overdevelopment” and claiming it will set a precedent for three storey developments across Altona. Plans show provision for 14 double garages in a basement car park, which represents a shortfall of two visitor spaces, as required by planning guidelines.

A traffic report prepared for the applicant states the anticipated traffic generation would have a negligible impact on the safety or operation of Fresno Street, Chifley Avenue and the surrounding road network.

The owner, Brian Noordenne of Noordenne Nominees, said he would prefer not to comment until Hobsons Bay council has made its decision.
