The Footscray Primary School bathrooms have been given a makeover by local artist Lady Mohawk, as part of the $20 million rebuild of the school.

Also known as Sally Walshe, Lady Mohawk said she was excited to splash the bathrooms with colour when school Principal Jen Briggs approached her with the idea.

“I really wanted to create a space where the youth felt safe and inspired to visit,” she said.

“Toilets are not just for the obvious, they are also where children go to for a bit of respite from the sometimes hectic nature of being at school.”

Lady Mohawk said the theme of the bathrooms are magical and intentional, combining images of bright coloured animals, coupled with inspirational and meaningful sentences that organically developed with the art.

Intentionally created for the children’s enjoyment, Lady Mohawk said she was pleased to hear the positive feedback coming from the students.

“One girl said she didn’t like going to the old bathrooms before but now she loves it, she feels like it’s bringing the jungle in and surrounding her with nature.

“Children are my favourite critics, they don’t sugar coat anything, so I’m happy.”
