Tradespeople urged to ensure electrical safety in flooded areas

Energy Safe Victoria is advising tradespeople working in flood-affected areas to ensure a licensed electrician makes the property safe before work commences.

Under Section 43A of the Electricity Safety Act 1998, a person carrying out building works can not create an unsafe situation by modifications which leave access to live electrical equipment.

Under the works, electrical workers would ensure the property was de-energised, removing any risk of a tradesperson receiving an electrical shock.

ESV chairperson and commissioner Marnie Williams said the most important thing was ensuring all tradespeople are as safe as possible working in flood-affected areas.

“If you are part of the effort to repair homes and buildings over the next few months, please contact a licensed electrical worker to make it safe before you start,” she said.
