Community stalwart and former Hobsons Bay mayor, Dick Murdoch, died on Thursday night after a long battle with cancer.

Mr Murdoch, 78, was elected to the former city of Altona in 1992.

He was mayor of Hobsons Bay from 1999-2000 and served on the council until his retirement in 2004.

Current president Maurie Tanian said Mr Murdoch would be greatly missed by all.

“Dick’s great loves of his life were his family, his community, his Lions club and the Swans football team,” he said.

“Dick was a magnificent member of of our club. He served with great distinction as a member for 37 years.

“He was just a magnificent member because all he cared about was the community.

“Community first, second, third – commununity all the way.”

Former Hobsons Bay mayor Leigh Hardinge said his former council colleague and “very good mate” would be sorely missed.

“He was a terrific community person.
